San Angelo, Texas, chooses to elect a chief of police to ensure that the position is directly accountable to the public. In jurisdictions where the police chief is elected, the belief is that it allows citizens to have a direct say in law enforcement and community safety priorities.
This electoral process can serve to make the police more responsive to community needs, concerns, and values, since the chief’s position depends on the public’s vote, rather than appointment by city officials or other methods.
Civic Duty and Code: A Commitment to Upholding San Angelo's Standards for Chief of Police
As a candidate for the Chief of Police in our beloved city of San Angelo, I hold our city’s charter in the highest regard, for it is the foundation upon which the duties and responsibilities of this critical role are built.
Section 60 of our city charter establishes the office of Chief of Police as an elective one, emphasizing the democratic nature of this role. It’s a clear statement of our city’s commitment to having its law enforcement leader directly answerable to the people it serves.
Section 61 speaks to the qualifications necessary for a candidate, ensuring that the Chief of Police is not just a skilled law enforcement officer, but also a resident and voter who shares the daily life and concerns of fellow San Angeloans. Having been a part of this community for over 15 years, I don’t just meet these qualifications—I live and breathe them every day.
Section 62 outlines the term of office, which stands at four years. These four years represent more than just time; they symbolize a period during which the Chief of Police must be tirelessly committed to the safety and well-being of the community. It’s a tenure I am fully prepared to honor with dedication and perseverance.
In Section 63, the duties and powers of the Chief of Police are detailed, encapsulating the essence of what I have dedicated my life to: preserving law and order and enforcing the ordinances of our city. My career in various divisions of our police department has been a long-standing testament to my commitment to these duties.
Lastly, Section 64 grants the Chief of Police authority over the police department. This is a profound responsibility that includes selecting and leading the team that serves our city’s public safety needs. My experience within our department assures me that together, with the right leadership, we can enhance the safety and security of all who call San Angelo home.
